  • Square Enix would make this a memorable experience for Web3 fans.

Square Enix, the iconic Japanese publisher of video games behind Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, as well as Kingdom Hearts, recently announced that its upcoming NFT-based game Symbiogensis would indeed be launched on Polygon, an Ethereum scaling network.

Symbiogenesis was first announced in November, with the publisher stating that the story-driven collectibles game would be launched on Ethereum at the time. Nonetheless, the company today announced that it would instead use Polygon, a sidechain that provides faster and cheaper transactions than Ethereum’s own mainnet.

Square Enix chose Polygon’s high transaction speeds, reduced fuel fees, and overall user-friendliness to give this memorable experience to Web3 fans, according to game producer Naoyuki Tamate in a press statement.

Since November, the publisher has been drip-feeding details via an official Twitter feed, but it has yet to release an official website, comprehensive trailer, or in-game screenshots ahead of its planned spring release.

Along with today’s release, Square Enix provided a few additional details. The game will reportedly be built around 10,000 character NFTs tied to strategic game mechanics, though other NFTs will be utilized as well.

Even so, owning a character NFT is not necessary to play the game, according to a document shared by Polygon Labs, though it brings unspecified “extra value” to the experience. Character NFT holders appear to be able to create “replica NFTs” in order to share story data with other players.

When a dragon poses a threat to their safe haven, society would be compelled to band together and make tough decisions on a floating continent above a polluted future Earth.

The game will feature turn-based gameplay linked to the storyline, as well as divergent paths as users complete quests and either hold or trade NFTs. Square Enix has shown off NFT items such as dragon tarot cards as well as a monster storybook but hasn’t disclosed how much they cost or how they influence the game.

Earlier, Square Enix made an investment in the Ethereum metaverse game The Sandbox, as well as plans to resurrect the dormant Dungeon Siege franchise in its virtual world. The publisher has indeed disclosed Final Fantasy VII NFTs that are linked to physical action figures via Enjin’s Efinity system based on Polkadot.
