  • The Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) is commemorating its 60th anniversary in an unconventional way: by launching an activation in The Sandbox metaverse.
  • The “Fashioning the Shades of American Design” engagement will begin on December 19 and last for one month.
  • It will include 60 retroactive fashion designs that have all been voxelized to fit The Sandbox theme.

Seven designer brands and the CFDA have collaborated to produce 1/1 NFTs with unique usefulness. Coach, Michael Kors, Carolina Herrera, Tommy Hilfiger, Diane von Furstenberg, Vivienne Tam, and Willy Chavarria are the seven brands mentioned. The 1/1 NFTs will include “money can’t buy” events like meet-and-greets with designers and backstage access to fashion shows.

The CFDA views the activation as a way to honor the past of fashion while also looking to the future using Web3 technology. The NFT platform Brand New Vision will be used by the CFDA to auction off the NFTs from December 12 to December 16. As of right now, the initial bids have demonstrated the NFTs’ distinctive utility, with some bids falling between $15,000 and $25,000. NFT technology is viewed by some as a means of democratizing the hitherto mostly walled-off fashion industry.

This is the CFDA’s first event in the metaverse, it was featured on Web3 back in April when it announced a partnership with The Sandbox and Polygon, two companies that provide layer-2 scaling solutions for the Ethereum blockchain. At the time, the partnership’s CEO, Steven Kolb, stated that one objective was to educate future business leaders in the Web3 industry.
