True Names Ltd has sued GoDaddy for illegally selling the Ethereum domain name. The company claimed that GoDaddy falsely reported that the eth.link domain has expired and sold it to a third party.
The complaint said,
In so doing, GoDaddy has deprived Plaintiff True Names Ltd. of its livelihood. The sale will disable a valuable cryptocurrency network and recklessly risk making it available to scores of malicious actors,
The developer and owner of Ethereum Name Service filed the lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for the District of Arizona on 5th September 2022. In the complaint, the company accused GoDaddy that falsely announcing that the eth.link domain registration has expired and sold the domain before its return to the registry and availability for re-purchase.
Virgil Griffith had registered the eth.link with GoDaddy in 2018. The eth.link domain registration was to expire on July 26th, 2023. But GoDaddy announced its expiration a year before on July 26th, 2022. The company sold the domain name to crypto start-up Manifold Finance on September 3rd, 2022.
Virgil Griffith AND True Names are seeking $75000 in damages and a restraining order against the defendants, GoDaddy, Inc., GoDaddy.com LLC, or any entity that directly or indirectly was involved in the sale of the eth.link domain name to the third party.
Currently, ENS has over 2 million domain name registration. Also, the eth.link landing page, as of now shows a message from the new owner, Manifold Finance saying the services will be restored within a week.
