We all are already aware of the fact that the premiere airline of Latvia, airBaltic, has been spearheading the experimentation of the airline industry with blockchain technology. This started with airBaltic becoming the first airline to accept Bitcoin and payments through other cryptocurrencies for flight tickets.

As per the announcement made by airBaltic on its official Twitter handle, airBaltic is launching an NFT collection with a special IRL utility, which is a link to its loyalty program. The NFT collection is called Planies, and as revealed, it will be featuring 10,000 NFTs. In addition to this, it was disclosed that the users would be obtaining commercial rights to the art of their cartoon airplane.

The President and CEO of airBaltic, Martin Gauss, stated that the Planies collections are aimed at preparing the loyalty program of the company for future tokenization. He further added to it that the company had witnessed a high interest in NFTs ever since its original collections launched back in 2021.

The Planies and club perks will be tied directly to the loyalty program of the company, and the collection will be made available for trading on OpenSea after launch and will create an additional utility for holders.

It has been disclosed that the NFTs will have a mint price of around $300, and users will be able to redeem the points for free flights. Moreover, they will be able to resell their NFT on the free market.

Martin Gauss has speculated that the tokenization of loyalty programs may bring a new world to airlines.
