  • Lionsgate and The Sandbox join hands to create a film and TV destination in the metaverse.
  • Action City will host film-themed experiences from a number of franchises, starting with HellBoy.
  • In the future, Lionsgate and The Sandbox might launch a virtual land studded with the studio’s catalog of horror titles.

The Sandbox has partnered with Lionsgate, a global content leader, and its partner, Millennium Media, to develop ‘Action City,’ which is a dedicated LAND meant to function as a thrilling entertainment destination, including voxelized characters and items that are inspired by fan-favorite Lionsgate and Millennium Media action films.

The collaboration was announced by The Sandbox on Twitter:

Players can interact and engage through Lionsgate’s LAND film-based experiences. Action City will launch with film franchises like Rambo, Rambo: Last Blood, The Expendables, The Expendables 2, The Expendables 3, and HellBoy.

A preview of the experience for HellBoy (2019) was shared by Lionsgate through a Twitter post:

The Sandbox team’s blueprint of letting players create their own experiences via original and renowned characters and worlds will be followed in Lionsgate and Millennium’s content in Action City. Voxel items will provide players utility as items that can be equipped on player Avatars or used in original experiences created by players.

Jenefer Brown, The Executive VP and Head of Global Live, Interactive, and Location Based Entertainment at Lionsgate, said:

We can’t wait to open our Lionsgate land in The Sandbox metaverse so fans around the globe can create, play, and explore our film IP in ways that go beyond what’s possible in the physical world. We’re excited by the new possibilities our strategic relationship with The Sandbox will offer our community.

Sebastien Borget, COO and Co-Founder of The Sandbox, said:

Our vision for The Sandbox has always been to bring to life thousands of colorful worlds where players can create their own original adventures alongside licensed content from their favorite movies, TV shows, anime, and more. Adding to this mix, a partner with the unparalleled global entertainment impact of Lionsgate – a company with 129 Academy Award nominations and a rich catalog of popular action and horror films – significantly enriches our open metaverse.
