A new category has been added to the 2022 MTV Video Music Award. This time, artists can compete against each other within the category- Best Metaverse Performance.

The awards began in 1984 to recognize music video prowess. Popular artists like Nirvana, Madonna, and Kanye West won awards previously.

Artist of the Year, Video of the Year, and Song of the Year are the award categories decided. However, a Web3 twist is there this year. Moreover, performances in the metaverse have also been included.

In the inaugural year, a total of six artists have been chosen for nomination- “the Rift Tour,” featuring Ariana Grande (Fortnite), the “Twenty One Pilots Concert Experience” (Roblox), BTS (YouTube), Blackpink’s “The Virtual” (PUBG Mobile), “Justin Bieber — An Interactive Virtual Experience” (Wave) and Charli XCX (Roblox).

On August 12, the award show made an announcement about its first metaverse experience. The VMA Experience in the Roblox metaverse was released by Paramount Game Studios. It is available till September 3, 2022.

Roblox has two performances lined up for nomination and a virtual world with culture events like festivals and concerts.

In 2021, Roblox collaborated with Insomniac to establish virtual festivals in its metaverse.
