Phishing attacks! Bored Ape and Mutant Ape stolen

SNEAK PEEK

  • Bored Ape #4587 stolen and sold for ~72 ETH.
  • Mutant Ape #3097 stolen and sold for ~16 ETH.
  • The NFTs have been sold on popular marketplaces Blur and LooksRare.

A few days ago, Today NFT News reported that a scam NFT project was listed on OpenSea. The project “Nyan Slash Check” had description points that redirected users to a fake zora website to make them mint a false token.

Prior to the scam, NFTs worth $173,000 were stolen from Nike’s RTFKT’s Nikhil Gopalan. And now there are two more additions to the list. Bored Ape Yacht Club’s ape #4587 has been stolen by 0x43C9…8e5. The NFT was previously sold 289 days ago for 89.9 ETH.

Other than the BAYC ape, there’s been one more ape that has been stolen as well. Mutant Ape Yacht Club #3097 was stolen by Fake_Phishing3868. Its last sale was over 412 days ago for 19.8 ETH.

Not only are these apes stolen but have been sold further. Reportedly, the stolen BAYC ape has been sold for ~72 ETH on the Blur marketplace to @machibigbrother. On the other hand, the MAYC ape #3097 has been sold for ~16 ETH on the LooksRare marketplace.

Yuga Labs is home to the most popular NFTs. In June 2022, in an attack Yuga lost NFTs worth $360,000 as a result of a server breach.

In April 2022, an unidentified attacker posted a fake link to a hacked BAYC Instagram account, which resulted in a copied version of its website and gave the hacker access to the Ethereum wallets of users. In the same month, Mutant Ape Yacht Club #8662 became the victim of a phishing attack. NFTs have remained the target of hackers despite a lot of alerts and tips being circulated from time-to-time. Yuga Labs surely needs to introduce strict guidelines and measures to curb such instances in order to secure its users’ assets in addition to its own profits.
